Jelsoft's vBulletin bought by Internet Brands

Jelsoft announces the sale of their flagship product vBulletin, the  popular community messageboard software vBulletin.  vBulletin has been sold to the US company Internet Brands.

vBulletin has recently added the Project Tools (a Project Management tool integrated into vbulletin) functionality, as well as Blogs capabilities.

A press release by James Limm, Managing Director of Jelsoft Enterprises Limited, reads:

We are pleased to announce that Jelsoft Enterprises Limited has been acquired by Internet Brands, Inc., a leading provider of automotive, travel and home-related sites and communities.

As part of a larger organisation, with more than 500 employees, Jelsoft has access to additional resources, support and business expertise which will ensure that we can continue to grow and flourish. Products will continue to be actively developed and fully supported, and as time goes on you will begin to see noticeable changes and improvements that are made possible by being part of a larger organisation.

Internet Brands' intention is to focus on improving what we are doing at the moment, and that means significant investment in our software development, customer service and sales and marketing processes. Internet Brands is willing, able and ready to invest heavily in Jelsoft, not only to continue to offer the same great products to our existing market, but also to empower us to enter new markets and find new audiences for our products and services.

The day-to-day management of Jelsoft will continue largely unchanged. I will continue as Managing Director and CEO of Jelsoft, working alongside the executive team at Internet Brands. John Percival, co-founder of vBulletin, will be taking this opportunity to pursue other interests, and I’m sure you will join me in wishing him well and every success in the future.

I'm really excited about this news, and feel strongly that it was a great decision for the company and our customers. Jelsoft has achieved significant success over the last few years, and before we officially move into this new era, I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to all customers who have supported Jelsoft and vBulletin - It is your continuous support and loyalty that has enabled vBulletin to become a market leader in community solutions. Rest assured that, with the help and resources of Internet Brands, we will continue to work hard to produce products that are innovative, feature-rich and forward-looking.

Personally, I'm less excited about the changes. I applied to their affiliate program and was just denied after days of waiting to hear back. What the F? Shut ... UP! Are you serious?!

At the present, things aren't looking too impressive at Jelsoft. Let's keep an eye on our favorite forum software and see if does get better or if it too is headed for a swirlie ride to it used to be good hell.

And anyone from Jelsoft who reads this blog ... wanna make it up to me, just contact me.

BulkRegister Sells To eNom

Dear BulkRegister Customer,

As you may have heard, eNom, Inc., (www.enom.com), already one of the largest registrars in the world in terms of domain names under management, has reached an agreement to acquire the business and operations of BulkRegister®. The combined company will surpass Network Solutions® to become the second-largest registrar in the world-with over 6.8 million names.

There will be no immediate changes to the BulkRegister member area or to the way in which you purchase and manage your domains. The popular BulkRegister member interface will remain functional as we gradually integrate those features together with eNom's outstanding API, hosted e-commerce "PDQ" storefronts, and reseller network.

We are confident that you will agree that we have brought together the best of both companies. BulkRegister and eNom® have each earned industry acclaim from high-volume domain name customers over the years. Both firms have shown a commitment to providing exceptional service and to building innovative tools to manage large portfolios of domains. In the coming weeks we will keep you informed as we begin to enhance our new combined platform.

You can be assured of our continuing commitment to stay on the cutting edge of large domain portfolio management, as well as offering more effective tools, high quality service and a solid technology platform for our bulk, reseller and retail customers. Toward that end, eNom has doubled its office space in Bellevue, Washington, adjacent to their previous space.

Of course we could not celebrate this exciting event without recognizing our loyal customer, for your years of patronage and support.

Welcome! You are now a part of the second largest domain registrar in the world!

New Spammer Tactics

MediaPost sent out this warning about spammers and their tactics:

Spammers have proven themselves fairly proficient at staying one step ahead of the technology and filters meant to foil them.

Now, it appears they've developed yet another tactic to get spam past filters--at least going by some of the spam I receive. (OK, I'm too curious and tend to open all e-mail, even the obvious spam.)

Recently, random bits of prose from JRR Tolkien have been included in the messages. This morning, a message with the subject line, "calih VleAGRA," included a passage from "The Hobbit." It read, "the hobbit that was lost. That only makes eleven (plus one mislaid) and not fourteen, unless wizards count differently to other people. But now please get on with the tale. Beorn did not show it more than he could."

Yesterday, a similar e-mail came, but with a few sentences from another Tolkien book.

A search this morning on the phrase "hobbit spam" revealed that it apparently rolled out in May, on a limited basis. Some of the first bloggers to write about the tactic predicted it would grow more widespread in the future since, apparently, passage from books can trick a number of spam filters.

For now, anyway. Eventually, of course, the Internet service providers will catch on to this strategy; in the meantime, expect to become expert at identifying random Tolkien prose.

Overview of Live.com

Microsoft Launches Beta Live.com Search Engine
March 09, 2006
By Mike Shields/Mediaweek

NEW YORK Microsoft has introduced a beta test version of its new search engine, Live.com, as part of its much-hyped initiative to launch a series of free ad-supported software products—namely Windows Live and Office Live—which will be distributed via the Internet.

The early version of Live.com, which went up Wednesday, features a clean Google-esque search box at the top of its home page, along with a series of Google-like simple keyword ad units displayed in the upper right-hand corner. The rest of the new search site allows users to customize their search experience by displaying personalized news headlines and weather information.

In addition, Live.com appears designed to allow users to link their Web search activity directly to the rest of their Microsoft-enabled activities, such as e-mail and MSN Messenger. When the new Windows Live and Office Live products were announced last year, Microsoft officials touted the potential synergy between its desktop and online software.

Both Windows Live and Office Live are said to feature Microsoft's beta adCenter product, a proprietary ad-serving platform that will allow companies the means to place search ads targeted by users' demographic information.

In 2005, Microsoft's MSN division made a lot of noise following the relaunch of MSN Search, which was meant to serve as a direct competitor to Google. Yet since that time, Google's market share in the search space has only increased, with MSN's share hovering in the neighborhood of 2 percent, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. It is unclear at this point how MSN Search and Live.com will fit together in the future.
